Project:   Pore Size Distribution of Geotextile Filters using the Bubble Point Method

PI(s):  Robert D. Holtz

Sponsor:  NAGS Award of Excellent grant

Objective:   To refine the bubble point procedure for determination of the PSD of geotextiles

Research Approach:   In order to properly design geotextile filters, a knowledge of the pore size distribution (PSD) of the soil to be filtered is needed. Currently the bubble point test is the preferred means to obtain the PSD of geotextiles. However, the test has never be thoroughly calibrated against porous materials of known pore distributions, nor have details of the proposed ASTM procedure been thoroughly researched. In this research, the influence of test variables is investigated with different intrusions and porous configurations.
