Project:   Ultimate Pullout Capacity of Soil Nails in Seattle Area Soils

PI(s):  Robert D. Holtz

Sponsor:  local shoring contractors

Objective:   To obtain the ultimate pullout data for soil nails installed in different local soils and with different installation procedures

Research Approach:   At most soil nailing shoring job sites, test nails are installed and testing to 200% design load. In this research, these test nails will be pulled until they fail, thus providing the real safety factor. Correlations will be made with local soil units, SPT N-values, drilling and grouting methods, and overburden pressures. It is anticipated that current design methods are overly conservative and uneconomical.
