About Us
Civil and environmental engineers plan, design, construct, and manage the essential facilities and structures that are all around us—from buildings and bridges to dams and transit systems. Using sophisticated tools at the forefront of technology, engineers in our field solve the problems of tomorrow in the face of increasing population and mounting environmental challenges.
UW Civil and Environmental Engineering continues to be recognized as one of the world's premier programs in our field, with both undergraduate and graduate programs of the department ranking in the top 20 in polls such as US News & World Report, National Research Council, and Gorman Report. We have approximately 200 undergraduate students and 170 graduate students enrolled. Our program strengths include environmental, earthquake engineering, transportation, structures, and water resources, and the department's recent progress in environmental engineering has added considerable strength in the area of biotechnologies.
As the flagship civil and environmental engineering program in the Pacific Northwest, our department continues to seek out new educational and research opportunities to prepare students for successful careers in design, construction, research, teaching, and management.
