International

International experience equips our students with the skills and savvy they need to compete in the global work environment. That need has only grown as companies increasingly look offshore to hire technical and engineering employees. Our department seeks out extensive and geographically diverse collaborations with colleagues from industry and other academic institutions.

Valle Program

As an example of these efforts, UW Civil and Environmental Engineering participates in the Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program, designed to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership, and service. The Valle program has a dual mission: (1) To promote and fund the exchange of graduate students between the University of Washington and programs in the Nordic countries, and (2) to support outstanding graduate students in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture and Urban Planning. Since 1980 when the program was established, 508 students have been given support from 3 months to 15 months of student at the UW and in Scandinavia.
