RESEARCH INTERESTS
Mechanistic investigations and modeling of organic and inorganic redox chemistry in natural and engineered environmental systems, particularly with regard to active chlorine, ozone, and reactive oxygen species
Integration of toxicological screening, risk assessment, and mechanistic research as related to environmental redox reactions and contaminant transformation products or by-products
Chemical oxidation processes in disinfection and their corresponding role in chemical and structural changes in cell components and nucleic acids
Characterizing and modeling the influence of abiotic redox processes on structural evolution of dissolved organic matter (DOM), as related to changes in its associated physical, chemical, and biological properties, within natural and engineered ecosystems
Characterizing the role of DOM in pollutant transformation and inactivation of pathogenic organisms by photochemically-generated reactive oxygen species and other transients in sunlit surface waters
Monitoring the influence of anthropogenic impacts on DOM quality in wastewater effluent-dominated surface water systems within heavily populated regions
Development and application of innovative chemical and/or physical-chemical techniques for simple, cost-effective inactivation or removal of pathogens during wastewater and drinking water treatment within disadvantaged societies and disaster-relief scenarios
