Steve Kramer received all of his degrees from the University of California at Berkeley: his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1977, Master's of Engineering in 1979, and Ph.D. in 1984. Between his Master's and Ph.D. studies, he worked for a consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area, and became registered as a Professional Engineer in California in 1982. He joined the faculty of the University of Wasington in 1984, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1990, and to full Professor in 1996. In 1998, he was named as the John R. Kiely Professor of Civil Engineering. Kramer received a Presidential Young Investigator award from the National Science Foundation in 1988, the Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 1991, and a Walter Huber Research Prize from ASCE in 1996. Kramer is the author of the book, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, co-developer of the educational site response analysis program, EduShake, and author of numerous technical papers and reports. He is a member of many professional societies including ASCE, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the Seismological Society of America, and others, and is a member of the Executive Management Committee of Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) center.
