Financial Aid & Scholarships
All graduate applicants admitted are automatically considered for financial aid from the department. The awards are made on a competitive basis by departmental faculty in each research area. No separate financial aid application is required.
Teaching Assistantships
Several Teaching Assistantships are usually available each year. The duties
vary from course to course but include conducting laboratory sessions, holding
consultation hours for students, grading homework and exams, etc. These assistantships
usually require 20 hours per week of service and currently pay $1530 per month
plus tuition, dental and health benefits. The total student obligation is approximately
$196 in student fees per quarter. The appointments are highly competitive and
awarded to the most outstanding applicants. The ability to communicate well
in English is a prerequisite.
Research Assistantships
The number of available Research Assistantships varies depending on the status
of research grants in the Department. Research Assistantships are supervised
by the faculty member who is the Principal Investigator on the grant. The duties
vary depending on the nature of the project, but usually require 20 hours per
week of service. The stipend and benefits are the same as for Teaching Assistantships.
Research Assistantships seeking a Master's degree are expected to take the thesis
option.
