CEE MASTERS DEGREE PROCEDURES

CEE procedures and selected graduate school procedures for CEE Master's degree students planning to graduate are listed below. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that these as well as all of the Graduate School Requirements are satisfied.

1. The student must establish an Advisory Committee consisting of 2-4 members. At least 2 members, including the student's faculty advisor, must be members of the Graduate Faculty.

2. Students must submit a program plan to the CEE Advising Office before the end of their first quarter. This form must be approved by the student's faculty advisor. The plan should indicate the members of the Advisory Committee, proposed coursework, whether a thesis or course-only option is being approved, and the exact degree goal (Master of Science, Master of Science in Engineering, or Master of Science in Civil Engineering) should be noted, based on the undergraduate degree. (For information on degree types see link). The proposed coursework should be checked against the CEE Master's Degree Requirements Checklist.

3. All students must be either registered or on leave during the academic year; otherwise they will have to reapply to Graduate School. Those with GSA appointments must be registered full time for 10 credits during the academic year (this includes international TAs and RAs). For those having summer appointments, 2 credits are required summer quarter.

4. During the final quarter in which the student expects to receive the degree, the student must be registered for a minimum of 2 credits.

5. Students must submit master's degree requests on the web. Students may submit a request from the 1st day of the quarter they expect to graduate until the Sunday (midnight Pacific Time) of the 7th week of the quarter they expect to graduate. If students miss the deadline, they may submit a request until the Sunday (midnight Pacific Time) of the 9th week of the quarter they expect to graduate if they pay a $250 graduate degree late fee. If degree requirements are not met in the requested quarter and/or students neglect to pay the late fee, they must submit another degree request for the quarter in which they expect to complete requirements.

The address of the master's degree request is:

Full instructions for submitting the master's degree request are available at: http://www.grad.washington.edu/stsv/mastersinfo.htm

NOTE: THE APPLICATION FOR MASTER'S DEGREE IS GOOD FOR ONE QUARTER ONLY.

6. The Graduate School orders and evaluates transcripts according to its minimum requirements (http://www.grad.washington.edu/stsv/mastersinfo.htm). Upon successful evaluation, the warrant or Application for Master's Degree is returned to the department and retained in the student's file until the dissertation defense or end of the quarter.

Occasionally, a contingency will be indicated on the application. This must be fulfilled to meet the Graduate School minimum requirements for the degree.

7. Thesis option: Please use the Graduate School's website to find thesis Style Manuals, fees, preliminary checks and details for final submission of your thesis. The student should go to the Graduate School in person to get the Graduate School preliminary review of their thesis several weeks before submission.

Thesis or Presentation: The student, along with the faculty advisor, should select the date and time for the final exam and send the CEE Advising Office a title, brief abstract, as well as room and equipment requirements at least two weeks prior to the proposed exam. Dissertation information will be posted with a title and a brief abstract.

8.Coursework only option: The student's committee must approve the student's accomplishments before the end of the final quarter. A short presentation may be required on material developed during the year.

9. The CEE Graduate Advising Office will print the Master's Degree warrants, and email students if any departmental contingencies have been added. The Advising Office will also verify that students have met departmental requirements according to their approved Program Plan.

10. Students should obtain their Request for Master's Degree from the CEE Graduate Advising Office one to two weeks before the end of the quarter in which they intend to graduate, and have the form signed and dated by at least two members of the advisory committee.

11. The signed Request for Master's Degree, as well as a completed Final Check-Out Form must be given to the CEE Graduate Advising Office at least two days before the last day of the quarter of graduation.

12. Thesis Option students must also submit two copies of their thesis, plus a receipt for the $25 binding fee (payable at the Cashier's Office in 129 Schmitz Hall), in person to the Graduate Student Services Office in G-1 Communications Building.

13. If these deadlines are not met, students will need to register and pay tuition for the following quarter.

14. Certification of the degree will appear on the UW transcript 3-4 weeks after the end of the quarter in which the degree is conferred.

15. Diplomas will be mailed by the Office of Graduation and Academic Records (264 Schmitz, 543-1803) at the end of the following quarter. This is approximately 3 months after the degree is conferred.
