General Requirements

  1. Students may only enter the CEE graduate program at the beginning of Autumn quarter.
  2. For both the thesis and course-only master's options a minimum of 42 quarter credits must be earned (see table above). Note: The department requires more credits than the Graduate School minimum requirement of 36 credits.
  3. Graduate School requirements apply to all 42 credits except for cases stated below.
  4. A Program Plan must be submitted to the CEE Advising Office and Director of Graduate Studies before the end of their first quarter. This form must be approved by the student's faculty advisor. The plan should indicate whether a thesis or course-only option is being approved, and the exact degree goal (Master of Science, Master of Science in Engineering, or Master of Science in Civil Engineering) should be noted, based on the undergraduate degree. (See Master's Degree Studies-Degree Types on website).
  5. All CEE classes, apart from seminars, need to be taken for a numerical grade.
  6. Two of the three seminars taken in the first year must be CEE seminars. If it becomes necessary to substitute one CEE seminar, you must provide a detailed explanation to your Advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies, stating why the substitution is requested. No more than three one-credit seminar credits can be counted toward the degree.
  7. At least 3 coursework credits outside the CEE program in which the student is enrolled.
  8. At least 15 credits of 400 or 500 level courses within the CEE department. All 400 level coursework requires prior approval by the program advisor and Director of Graduate Studies, since requirements vary by program.
  9. Generally, no 100 to 300 level coursework is counted toward a graduate degree, however, some 300-level courses are counted with prior Program approval.
  10. 498 or 499 level classes are not approved.
  11. Up to 6 credits of approved graduate classes taken while a graduate student at a recognized graduate school may be transferred. Credits cannot have been used for another degree. A petition to the Graduate School is needed after students enter the department. See (14) for timing issues.
  12. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required for a graduate degree.
  13. A grade of less than 2.7 in any class does not count toward a graduate degree.
  14. The entire master's program must be completed within 6 years, including transfer credits and on-leave status.
  15. The student must obtain and complete a Final Checkout Form from the CEE Graduate Advising Office.

Thesis Option Additional Requirements

  1. At least 30 coursework credits.
  2. At least 9 thesis credits (CEE 700).
  3. At least 15 credits of 500 or 600 level courses.
  4. At least 18 credits taken for a numerical grade; all CEE courses must be numerically graded.
  5. CEE 600 credits are not allowed.
  6. Approval of dissertation and a thesis defense by committee.
  7. For students doing a double major masters degree, thesis credits counted in another department cannot be used as the cross-credits in civil engineering.

Coursework-Only Option Additional Requirements

  1. At least 39 coursework credits.
  2. A maximum of 3 CEE 600 credits for a research project.
  3. At least 21 credits of 500 or 600 level courses.
  4. At least 21 credits taken for a numerical graded; all CEE courses must be numerically graded.
  5. Approval of students work and possible examination as determined by the candidate's committee.
