How to Apply
Application Instructions for Early and Upper-Division Admissions.
Please review CEE Admissions Overview before applying.
Transfer Applicants: If you are not currently enrolled at the UW, you must apply to the UW prior to completing the engineering application. Deadlines for UW applications are significantly sooner than for engineering. For details, see UW Admissions website. Please indicate your interest in the CEE major on your UW application form. UW Office of Admissions will often await departmental review of candidates for competitve programs, so transfer applicants should proceed to submit the engineering application even if they have not received an offer of admission to the UW prior to the engineering application deadline.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department accepts new majors once a year for Autumn Quarter only. The online engineering application opens approximately two weeks before the July 1 deadline.
The criteria for admission will be based various factors, including overall academic track record, grades in prerequisite courses, GPA of prerequisite courses, personal statement, and the potential for success as a CEE major and in the profession.
Application Deadline
- July 1, 5 p.m. - Online Engineering Application Due
CEE Prerequisites must be completed by the July 1 application deadline. If you are unable to complete the prerequisite by July 1, see instructions for Conditional Application.

Application Process
The College of Engineering Online Application
Applications for autumn admission to the undergraduate program will be accepted starting in mid-June with the application deadline of July 1. The online application opens approximately two weeks prior to the July 1 application deadline.
After 5 p.m. on July 1, the engineering application will close until the next available admission period.Students may use the online engineering application form to apply for multiple departments at the same time. In fact, students are encouraged to have an alternate major option (or two) in case they are not accepted to the major of their first choice. Applying for too many majors, however, could hurt your chances for an offer of admission, so be thoughtful in your planning. The personal statement that you submit should be specific to each department to which you apply. Each department can only see the information relevant to its own department.
During the open application period, you will be able to work on your application, save it and return to it later as you wish.
Personal Statement
As part of the online application, you will submit a personal statement. Write a brief personal statement (approx. 1- 2 pages) that will give the departmental admissions committee a better understanding of your interest in this program. You may wish to describe your experiences (e.g. work, research, leadership, or extracurricular) that have been important to you as well as your future goals. You may also use the personal statement or provide a supplemental statement to discuss any unusual or extenuating circumstances that may contribute to a better understanding of your record. For example, if you have had to overcome significant obstacles (medical, financial, cultural or personal) to reach where you are now, you may wish to discuss these and how they have affected your education. If you are requesting conditional admission, address this in your personal statement and indicate when and how you plan to resolve the deficiency.
Transcripts
Submit unofficial transcripts electronically (as PDF) as part of the online application, or send by mail to the following address:

Note: Recommendation Letters are not required for the CEE application.
Letters of recommendation would be appropriate only in circumstances where the recommender can provide verification to a claim, or provide additional information or clarification which is not available from the student’s application. Character/performance references are unnecessary.
Submitting a Conditional Application for Admission
If you expect that you cannot finish all the prerequisite courses by the July 1 deadline, contact the CEE advisor at ceadvice@uw.edu as early as possible to discuss your situation, prior to the start of online application. In your email please include (1) the missing prerequisite course, (2) where and when the course will be taken, and (3) your contact information and UW ID number, if available. Under special circumstances, students may be allowed submit an application for admission pending the completion of one or two prerequisite courses.
Notification & Appeals
The CEE Undergraduate Admissions Committee reviews applications soon after the July 1 deadline.
Admissions decision notifications go out via email (to your UW email account) at the end of July or early August. If you are offered admission, please respond promptly regarding your decision to accept or decline the offer of admission (both with the UW and CEE Department). Your registration date is determined by when you deposit your confirmation fee and when you schedule your UW and CEE Orientation dates.
Appeals: Applicants denied admission may appeal by submitting a petition in writing if the applicant believes that the decision was based on incomplete or erroneous information. The petition should include relevant supporting documents and be submitted as promptly as possible. An application is valid only once; reapplication must be made for consideration for a future admission date.
