Earthquake Reconnaissance

On the flanks of the Mt. Jiao-fen-err landslide. This slide took place near the small village of Nankang in Central Taiwan immediately following the September 21, 1999 Ji-Ji earthquake. The slide, which was approximately 5 km long and 3 km wide, killed about 40 people and dammed two rivers; the head scarp of the slide is visible in the distance (upper right portion of photograph). The reservoir being formed by one of the landslide dams is visible in the lower left corner of the photograph. This photograph was taken six days after the earthquake; a subsequent visit in mid-December showed that the water level in the reservoir had risen considerably.
