Prediction of Permanent Displacement

Predicted and observed permanent displacements for the centrifuge and shaking table model tests are shown in logarithmic and arithmetic plots below. The data represent slopes of heights ranging from 4 ft to 24 ft, L/H ratios ranging from 0.25 to 0.70, and S/L ratios ranging from 0.xx to 0.yy; the slopes were subjected to a wide range of transient and harmonic loading conditions.

Despite the wide range of conditions in the experimental database, the calibrated RMNM produces estimates of permanent displacement that are generally within a factor of 2 (denoted by red lines) of the observed permanent displacements with a slight conservative bias. This degree of accuracy is consistent with that typically obtained for conventional Newmark analyses of unreinforced slopes.
