Project:  Liquefaction of Washington State Soils

PI(s):  Steve Kramer

Sponsor:  WSDOT

Objective:  To develop improved procedures for evaluation of liquefaction hazards in Washington state.

Research Approach:  Soil liquefaction presents hazards to many existing transportation structures and adds considerable cost to the design and construction of new structures in Washington state. The liquefaction resistance of soils is known to be sensitive to specific characteristics of individual soils including characteristics that have not been systematically evaluated for soils in Washington state. This project will systematically investigate the liquefaction resistance of selected soils from Washington state by a comprehensive program and field and laboratory testing. Soils will include clean sands, silty sands, and gravels; lateral spreading and flow slide potential will be investigated.
