Committed to encouraging and inspiring the next generation of engineers, UW CEE faculty and students participate in several outreach programs designed especially for elementary through high school students.
UW CEE hosts a free hands-on summer program in water science and engineering education, which teaches Seattle-area students and teachers about the water supply and treatment process. The program consists of two separate week-long workshops, one for teachers and a second for students. Led by CEE Associate Professor Michael Dodd, the workshops are supported by a National Science Foundation grant.
UW CEE faculty and students participate in the annual Engineering Discovery Days, held in April. The free two-day event introduces elementary through high school students to engineering through a variety of hands-on activities and exhibits. From a shake table exhibit, which tests model structures to see if they can withstand a series of simulated earthquakes, to testing drinking water, future engineers learn about the Civil & Environmental Engineering field.
