Congratulations, graduates! 2018 graduation celebration

 Graduating students proceed to their seats during the department ceremony. 

A total of 283 graduates were honored on Sunday, June 10 at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering graduation ceremony. The graduating class was comprised of 10 Ph.D. graduates, 136 master’s graduates and 137 bachelor’s graduates.

The department was honored to have alumnus Lee Marsh (Ph.D. ’91) as the keynote speaker. Marsh is the president/CEO of BergerABAM, a 250-person civil/structural infrastructure consulting firm. The student reflections speech was delivered by graduating senior Martha Quigg.

Awards

A number of awards were presented during the ceremony, honoring students and faculty for excellence. The following awards were presented:

The Neil & Ann Hawkins Award was presented to two students: Yuzhu Huang (first prize) and Kai Pope (second prize). The annual award, established by former department chair Neil Hawkins and his wife, recognizes two outstanding graduating seniors based on academic merit, leadership and service and communication skills.

The Faculty Teaching Award, determined by the vote of graduating students, was presented to assistant professor Brett Maurer.

The Faculty Mentoring Award, also determined by the vote of graduating students, was presented to professor Joe Mahoney.

The Chair’s Award for outstanding teaching was presented to assistant professor Richard Wiebe.

The Chair’s Award for outstanding service was presented to professor Dawn Lehman.

 

Class of 1968 Honorees

The 50th reunion class was also honored at the celebration. Alums from the class of 1968 were presented with commemorative “stoles of gratitude” and were invited to walk in the procession with faculty and graduates.
