A native of Savannah, Georgia, Professor Dorothy Reed received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina, magna cum laude, and a M.S.E. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Princeton University. Professor Reed joined the University of Washington faculty, following two years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). At the University of Washington, she served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for three years. Currently, she is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Adjunct Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at U.W.
She has lectured on wind engineering and other topics such as structural reliability at academic institutions nationally and internationally. Her research interests include the investigation of the resiliency and sustainability of civil infrastructure systems with particular emphasis on post-hurricane performance of power delivery systems. Her research has been featured in the NSF Science Nation series. Recently, her research has focused on green infrastructure and energy efficiency of buildings. She is on the board of directors of the Americas Association for Wind Engineering (AAWE), and conducted post-hurricane damage investigations in the Gulf of Mexico. She serves as elected chair of the national technical Structural Wind Engineering Committee (SWEC), of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
