How did you first become interested in engineering?

I became interested in civil engineering as I was researching majors to pursue in college. I’ve always had my parents as role models, and both are chemical engineers. Therefore, I am sure engineering was on the back of my mind all through my life.

What UW CEE program were you enrolled in?

Non-Thesis Master Degree in Engineered Systems in Water Quality.

Why did you choose UW Civil & Environmental Engineering?

I had already been working and living in the Seattle area and wanted to further my education through a master’s degree in my field.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I really enjoyed the applied portions of the courses where we stepped outside of the campus and visited sites and systems that apply to the course. For example, we took a trip up to the Nooksack watershed in the Mount Baker area to learn about issues with sediment transport. We also took several trips to water and wastewater treatment plants in the area where we saw applied technologies that we were studying in class.

What aspect of the field are you particularly interested in?

My focus is on stormwater quality, which incorporates both physical and chemical processes as well as a bit of hydrology and sediment transport. I really liked the ability to take classes in environmental engineering and complement them with great classes in hydrology, which helps me further my interest in stormwater quality.

Where are you now working? Please describe your job. 

I work as a project manager for Osborn Consulting, Inc. in Bellevue, where I work on stream restoration and stormwater projects for various jurisdictions in Washington. 

How did your UW CEE degree prepare you for your career?

My degree prepared me with the in-depth knowledge to tackle any problem in the stormwater world, think systematically about the issues and come up with sound engineering solutions. 

Any advice for prospective students who are considering UW CEE?

Get involved in activities outside of your classes, but also take advantage of the great networking opportunities the Seattle area is offering. Your best career opportunities will come from the connections you make.
