Professor Emeritus John Stanton, who joined the CEE faculty in 1978, retired earlier this year. His research on seismic engineering, bridge design and precast concrete helped shape how engineers design buildings and bridges to withstand earthquakes, and how to build them faster and more efficiently.

Stanton earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical sciences from the University of Cambridge, a master’s degree in civil engineering from Cornell University and a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining the UW, he spent six years in structural engineering design practice in Britain, France and Canada.

At the UW, he made a point of working with colleagues and former students in industry so his research could be put into practice. His work on prestressed concrete and bridge bearings has influenced how transportation infrastructure is built across the region and beyond. In 2016, he delivered the Steve and Sylvia Burges Endowed Lecture on the science and art of bridge design and construction.

Colleagues and students know Stanton for his deep technical expertise, careful approach to engineering problems and lasting investment in student success. In June, he gave the keynote address at CEE's graduation celebration, sharing reflections from his career with graduates.
